Understanding the USD-PKR rate
There isn't one USD-PKR rate — there are three. Knowing which rate you're looking at can save (or cost) you 2–5% on every transfer.
- Interbank / mid-market rate — the wholesale rate banks use with each other. This is the "true" exchange rate and what Google, Bloomberg, and Reuters show. Our calculator uses this.
- Bank retail rate — the rate your bank gives customers for buying/selling USD. Usually 1.5–3% worse than interbank.
- Remittance rate — the rate remittance services use when converting your USD to PKR for delivery in Pakistan. Varies widely: 0.3–4% worse than interbank.

Best ways to send USD to Pakistan
Pakistan's State Bank (SBP) regulates inward remittances. The government offers Roshan Digital Account (RDA) specifically for overseas Pakistanis, often with preferential rates and tax benefits.
Wise (TransferWise)
Uses close to mid-market rate, flat fee (~$5–15 per transfer). Best for transparent pricing. Delivery: bank account in Pakistan, 1–2 business days. Good for transfers above $500.
Remitly
Economy option often gives worse rate but zero fee for first transfer. Express option has better rate but fee. Good for small amounts and speed. Delivery: bank account, Jazz Cash, Easypaisa, or cash pickup.
Western Union / MoneyGram
Widely available, cash pickup at thousands of agents. Rates and fees are worst among major options — use only when recipient has no bank account.
Roshan Digital Account (RDA)
Government-backed, for overseas Pakistanis. Preferential USD deposit rates (currently ~7% in Naya Pakistan Certificates). Opens online, no need to visit Pakistan. Offered by major Pakistani banks: Meezan, HBL, UBL, Faysal Bank.
Bank wire transfer
Direct bank-to-bank (SWIFT). Usually worst exchange rate plus $20–40 wire fees. Only makes sense for large amounts ($10,000+) where fees are a small % of the total.
SBP regulations for remittances
Incoming remittances to Pakistan are tax-free for the recipient — SBP actively encourages them. Outward remittance (sending money from Pakistan abroad) is heavily restricted for residents. Key rules:
- No tax on incoming remittances to Pakistani bank accounts
- Sender in the US/UK may need to declare transfers over $10,000 under IRS/FinCEN rules
- Roshan Digital Account holders can repatriate USD freely
- Recipients can withdraw USD from RDA or convert to PKR at market rate
Is the exchange rate in this calculator accurate?
The calculator uses live rates from exchangerate.host, an aggregator that follows the European Central Bank's reference rates. These are close to interbank mid-market, suitable for reference and planning.
Actual rates you'll get from a bank or remittance service will be 0.3–3% worse. Always compare the effective rate (total received PKR divided by USD sent) across 2–3 services before committing to a large transfer.
